Can dogs eat apples? The health benefits of feeding fruit to your pets.

Fido’s been on his best behavior today. He was a team player during playtime with the neighbor’s dogs and never once tried to jump on the furniture in the house. Now it’s time to give Fido a yummy reward. You glance past the jar of treats — he’s been such a good boy that you want to give him something extra special today, so you open the fridge to see what you have in stock. You give him carrots a lot — mainly to help clean is teeth, so we skip the carrots today, but then you notice…apples! Hmm, I’ve never given my dog apples before… I wonder if he can eat them? Let’s find out!

dog apples

As it turns out, many fruits and vegetables are safe and healthy for dogs and puppies to eat. Dog owners across our social media channels messaged us and even wrote in asking us: Can my dog eat apples? The answer is YES! Not only are apples safe for dogs to eat, but they offer tons of nutritional benefits. In fact, your dog can eat any apple — from Fuji to McIntosh to Granny Smith — any apple is satisfactory.

The health benefits of apples for dogs: Vitamin A and Vitamin C

Not only are these two vitamins power-packed within an apple, but you’ll find your dog’s skin and coat healthier thanks to Vitamin A — which also helps boost the immune system. The Vitamin C found in apples offers puppies in particular proper bone and muscle development.

Editor’s Note: Fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A can build up to a toxic level in rare instances. Make sure to consult your veterinarian if you’re considering supplementing your dog’s diet with large amounts of Vitamin A. Remember: Everything in moderation!

Healthy Poop!

The fiber in apple will aid in your dog’s digestion. Fiber slows the rate that sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream. Fiber is not considered an essential nutrient in your dog’s diet, but it is present in almost every commercial dog food. While dogs do not derive any energy from fiber, adding fiber to a diet improves colon health, helps with weight management, and helps with diarrhea, constipation, and diabetes mellitus.

How to Feed Apples to Your Dog

Make sure to remove the core and the seeds, because the seeds contain bits of cyanide which can be toxic to your dog. Your dog may choose from either red or green apples for his diet and unsweetened applesauce can also work for your dog’s kibble. Dog behaviorist and celebrity, Cesar Milan, suggests offering your pet fresh apple slices (with the seeds removed) which offer an added bonus of cleaning residue off of your dog’s teeth.

Chubby pup? Apples to the rescue!

Soluble fiber in apples, called pectin, reduces the amount of sugar and calories that’s absorbed into the bloodstream after a meal. That’s good news for folks who want to prevent type 2 diabetes, but it also makes apples one of the best snacks for dieters. Apple pectin prevents spikes in blood sugar that lead to increased fat storage. Just be mindful of your dog’s fruit intake so that he/she is not ingesting too much sugar.

Antioxidants for Gastrointestinal Health

Scientists have now calculated the antioxidant power of the apple is equal to more than 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C. The vast majority of its antioxidants come from flavonoids. Antioxidants are not essential to your dog’s health, however, they lend themselves to good eyesight, bone development, chronic diseases, and more.

Does my dog actually like eating apples?

Yes — absolutely! Just like humans, dogs get tired of eating the same kibble every day. So, why not mix it up with something fresh and nourishing? Dogs especially love the crunchy texture of apples — just as they do carrots.

A Best Friend for Christmas: Depressed Marine Gets a Puppy

depressed marine gets puppy, beagle puppy, puppy, christmas story

Whoever came up with the phrase, “a dog is man’s best friend” hit the nail on the head. And the saying couldn’t be truer for this tear-jerker of a story. Young, retired U.S Marine Corp vet returned home to his family in Tallahassee hoping to get back to his life and new beginnings. But Peter Coukoulis didn’t expect to begin suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) shortly after settling back in.

For those of you who don’t fully know, PTSD can bring on massive anxiety, stress, depression, vivid flashbacks, and major insomnia. It can be near impossible to deal with or overcome. And often, veterans are left feeling isolated and alone in their suffering. And that’s pretty much how Peter felt for three years.

All until just recently, after his loving family got together and found the perfect gift for him. Gathered around the kitchen table, Peter sat as his family watch him examine the big present wrapped with a bow. He seemed to think he knew what was in it, but he was clearly wrong according to his face upon opening the lid.

Inside, a gorgeous, sweet beagle puppy met Peter with his precious little eyes and it was instant love. It’s exactly what Peter needed and he broke down in tears of happiness when he held the pup in his arms. The puppy will grow up to be his service animal and closest friend, something that every PTSD sufferer could benefit from. When this depressed marine gets a puppy, his whole world changes.

Animal therapy can be extremely successful in overcoming any type of anxiety or depression, even major PTSD. Peter’s family member, Dena spoke with the news agency and stated that the puppy has already changed Peter’s life in so many ways. Watch the full video here.

What an inspiring Christmas story! Do you have a holiday tear-jerker of your own to share? Comment below!

Top 5 Most Insane Cat True Stories

eye in the dark, cat true stories, norman reedus cat

If you’re a cat lover then you’ll love these 5 cat true stories! Everything from a pet lion to a bus riding orange tabby. Check it out and let us know which is your favorite!

  1. Christian the Lion

cat true stories, christian the lion, cats

Christian was a lion cub who was born in captivity and then adopted by John Rendall and Anthony “Ace” Bourke in 1969. The two men raised Christian to be a loving, playful lion but when he grew too big to remain in captivity, the two friends released him into the wild where he could be a real lion.

A few years later, the two men went on an adventure to find Christian and see if he remembered them. Wildlife experts warned them not to, that the giant cat would be too wild, but the opposite happened. Christian the lion remembered his foster fathers and ran into their arms immediately.

  1. Eye in the Dark

eye in the dark, cat true stories, norman reedus cat

Norman Reedus’s son looked at him one day and said, “Daddy, I want a cat.” When Reedus asked why his son simply said it’s something he really needed. Being the doting father he is, Norman called all around the city to find a good shelter that had kittens available.

He found one, and saw an awesome black cat, right up his alley. But the shelter worker warned him against the animal, saying the cat was mean and would never be a good pet. That was all Norman needed to hear. “I’ll take that one,” he said.

The beautiful black cat is now a big, ball of love and is aptly named for his ability to become nothing more than eyes in the dark when he sits on Reedus’s black floor.

  1. The Artful Dodger

artful dodger cat, cats, cat true stories

This sweet little orange tabby rides the bus every day in his hometown of Bridgeport UK. He has a home, Artful’s not a stray. But he enjoys the ride and does it so often that all the drivers know when and where to pick him up and drop him off. Some even bring treats and cans of cat food for the kitty.

  1. Samson the Maine Coon

cat true stories, samson maine coon, cats

Just shy of an actual wildcat, Samson the Maine Coon is the world’s largest domestic cat, coming in at an impressive 4ft long and weighing 28lb. He lives in NYC with his owner who he wakes each and every morning by sitting on his chest. Can you imagine waking up to a giant cat on top of you?

  1. IKEA & Cats

IKEA cats, cat true stories, cats

In terms of cat true stories, this one is definitely insane and unusual. Recently, IKEA set loose 100 cats in their store in Wembley to test out which items they preferred. The idea was that cats are domestic animals and are pretty choosy when it comes to comfortable furniture and homey items. So, they let them loose and observed their activity. The result was pretty cute.

Top 5 Most Insane True Dog Stories

Some people are truly amazing. But these 5 insane true dog stories are something us humans just can’t compete with. You honestly can’t help but feel inspired by each and every one.

1) Swansea Jack

swansea jack, labrador retriever, true dog stories

This black Labrador retriever (although some believed him to be a Newfoundland dog) is long gone but his sweet memory most certainly is not. He got his name from living near the Swansea River in Wales, England. But why would you name a pet after the body of water you live next to? Well, only if the brave animal risked his own life to save almost 30 people over the course of his short life.

During the mid-thirties, when Swansea Jack was alive, he saw a little boy drowning in the water. He jumped in, pulled the boy to shore, and then continued to jump in and save people as time went on. He was a hero. They awarded him the silver cup for bravery from the mayor of London, and he even had a statue made of himself.

2) Barry the Saint Bernard

barry the saint bernard, saint bernard, true dog stories, dogs

We all know how large and monstrous Saint Bernards are. But they’re nothing but big, cuddly bears. Originally, they were bred as rescue dogs in cold, harsh climates. They always went out on missions in sets of two so, once the person was found, one would sit on them for warmth while the other went for help.

Barry the Saint Bernard was so good at what he did, rescuing over 40 victims during the course of his 12 years, that event to this day, there’s always a rescue dog named Barry at the monastery where the original lived.

3) Jasmine the Greyhound

jasmine the greyhound, greyhound, dogs, true dog stories

Poor Jasmine the Greyhound was a stray dog who was discovered alone, shaking, and starving in a locked garage. A cop had found her and brought the dog to a wildlife sanctuary where she was nursed back to health.

The incredible thing about this story is that, unlike most abandoned and abused dogs, jasmine was gentle and nurturing. As soon as she began to feel better, she immediately began helping other strays that came in feel better.

She was a foster dog mother to puppies, kittens, foxes, chicks, Guinea pigs, bunnies, and even a deer during the better half of her life.

4) Ramen Noodle the Poodle

ramen noodle the poodle, poodle, dogs, true dog stories

It’s so sad when you see an animal without all of it’s limbs, or is injured in a way that affects their entire life. But you can’t feel sad for Ramen Noodle the poodle. This dog was born with all of his limbs, but lost his front two arms in two separate incidents after breaking the bones beyond repair.

Ramen quickly jumped back to good health each time, and never lost hope. He learned to walk/hop around on two legs and even has a specially made wheelchair for long walks. He’s the perfect example of staying positive.

5) Glenn and Buzz

buzz and glenn, jack russell terrier, dogs, true dog stories

Have you ever heard of a seeing eye dog…dog? Well, that’s pretty much what Buzz is for his best buddy Glenn in this one true dog stories.
